Leonard Fulton Ross (1823-1901), Union general. He raised the 17th Regiment of Illinois Infantry, and was commissioned Colonel in May of 1861, leading it in Kentucky and Missouri. He commanded 3rd Brigade, 1st Division of the Army of Tennessee. On Apr. 25, 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General of U.S Volunteers. McPherson was born in Clyde, Ohio. He attended Norwalk Academy in Norwalk, Ohio, and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1853, first in his class, which included Philip H. Sheridan, John M. Schofield, and John Bell Hood; Hood would oppose him later in the Western Theater. McPherson was directly appointed to the Corps of Engineers with the rank of brevet second lieutenant.
